For many creatives the lockdown of 2021 provided opportunities to explore previously unpublished works and to embark on new projects.
I have always been a songwriter and have a vast collection of lyrics especially. In 2020 I rediscovered old songs as well as writing tunes and arrangements for lyrics old and new.I was inspired not only by my own experiences but by those shared stories from close friends and also by the political and social issues that presented in 2020-21.
Working with talented multi-instrumentalist and producer Elián Sellanes was a joy! Much of our collaboration occurred online and we would send drafts and demos back and forth to each other. Once circumstances permitted, I went to his studio to record lead and backing vocals and he even provided some backing vocals in a few songs.
The album does not express one style of music and is deliberately multi-genre. Each song dictated its own style of expression to use and it was a challenge to sing so many different genres.
The title track Goddess is the story of emotional abuse in a relationship and finding the courage to escape and find peace and happiness. It is a love song to all the women suffering this unseen abuse expressing that they are brave, wise and strong and deserve better. It was chosen as the title track for its important message at this time.
